Moments of Lawrence Alma-Tadema
Lawrence Alma-Tadema is one of the best examples of what is called "Victorian painting", art we find in Great Britain in the era of Queen Victoria (almost the whole 19th century).
Victoria's reign grew into a global power, progressing toward modernization and industry. It was a period of imperial splendor and pride. However, because development inevitably brings with it pain and ugliness, artists sought refuge in a glorious, idealized past full of luxury and pleasure, gorgeous and sensuous women, and a plethora of color. A golden past, more in their imagination than in reality.
