Moments of Jean-Michel Basquiat

Basquiat's short life (he died at 28) had the frenetic rhythm of the New York streets. When he was a teenager, he was thrown out of the school for gifted youngsters and dedicated to graffiti. He signed as “SAMO” that means “SAMe Old shit.” He slept in buildings or park benches like a true marginal, and earned his life by selling cards or T-shirts that he painted, or by selling drugs, or playing music in clubs where the New York cultural elite went.

Basquiat experienced the most primitive, instinctive, wild aspect of the city. He did not observe it, he lived in it. That is why his work is full of authenticity and strength.
