Moments of Ingres
Jean-Auguste-Dominique was Jacques-Louis David’s student, and both are the most representative painters of Neoclassicism.
Neoclassicism is contemporary and opposed to Romanticism. And Ingres' work, although neoclassical in form (order, formal perfection, predominance of line over color, harmony, calm), has a rather romantic spirit. Therefore, some of his works may seem romantic (for example, those of odalisques, where orientalism and exoticism are typical elements of dreamy and idealistic romanticism).
Also, some of his works, such as Raphael and Fornarina, are considered examples of the troubadour style, which are formally neoclassical works, but instead of admiring the values of antiquity and its mythology, they romantically idealize medieval stories.
