Characteristic Elements of Mannerist Painting

These are the characteristics that we usually find in the work of the Mannerist period (16th century), which we can consider a transition between the Renaissance and the Baroque.

Explicit technical virtuosity. Artists show their skilful "maniera" (style).

Sophistication, elegance.

Stylized ("stretched") figures. Beyond the stylization of the human body in general, the long necks and hands tend to attract attention.

“Whimsical" proportions, looking for elegance.

Bright, unnatural colors.

Exaggerated postures, little naturalness.

Complex compositions.

Foreshortenings.

Serpentine figure.
