Characteristic Elements of Renaissance Painting

The Renaissance mainly encompasses the 15th and 16th century, called “Quattrocento” and “Cinquecento” respectively.

Concern for perspective.

Gestures with expression. Faces start to express emotions.

Volume and depth.

Equilibrated and harmonious composition.

Harmony, calmness. In general, scenes transmit serenity; the bodies are at rest. (The opposite takes place in the Baroque.)

Sfumato. Effect used for the borders to appear not well defined but blurred.

Glazes. Very thin overlapping transparent layers that create the sfumato effect.

Idealization of beauty.

Return to the mythological themes. Rebirth of the Classic Antiquity.

Heroic nude. Beauty is the reflection of virtue. That is why gods and heroes do not cover their perfect bodies with clothes.

Realistic technique. Evolution of the technique so as what is represented looks real.

Search of correct anatomic proportions.

Portrait as independent genre.
