Eva Gonzalès (1849-1883)

Nanny and Child (1877/78)

The following four female painters are considered to be part of the Impressionist movement: Eva Gonzalès, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond.

Eva, Manet’s faithful student and friend, was very influenced by him in both her works —as we can appreciate in this painting— and also in the attitude towards the movement. She was part of the group and supported it, but preferred to exhibit in the official Salons and did not participate in Impressionist exhibitions.

Although Manet remained apart from the movement, he is the “father”, the hero for the young Impressionists. With Luncheon on the Grass, he stimulated them to take distance from rules of the Academy and to paint what they experimented themselves, what they perceived as “real.”

Eva Gonzalès studied with the famous French academist: Charles Joshua Chaplin. She was a model and then a student of Édouard Manet. Berthe Morisot also was her student and model, but then turned into the great love of the painter, even though she was married to his brother.

Eva’s work is characterized by an equilibrium between the academy and the quick, free, spontaneous brushstroke of the Impressionism. At first, her palette was similar to Manet’s, a bit dark, but then it turned lighter, more “Impressionist.”

Her career was short because she died at 34, while giving birth. What would she have achieved if she had lived longer? We will never know. Despite her short career she has been recognized and this recognition increases as time goes by.
