Moments of Modigliani

1908. Portrait of a Young Girl. Early work in which Modigliani, before developing his own style, was influenced by Lautrec (as seen in this work), the Japanese prints, Cézanne, Klimt and Cubism.

1909. The Amazon

1909. The Cellist

In 1909, Modigliani met the sculptor Brancusi. Under his influence, and as he considered himself more of a sculptor than a painter, he left painting to devote himself to sculpture (until 1914). At this point, he became fascinated by African sculpture, which would influence the stylized figures with long necks and almond-shaped eyes that characterized his sculptures and later paintings and which would turn him into the Modigliani we know.
