The Madonnas of Botticelli and the Differences with those of Raphael

Six Paintings. One Concept

Within Botticelli's Christian work (the most famous paintings of this artist are representations of mythological themes) his Madonnas stand out especially.

As we observe them, we can discover an interesting difference with those of another Renaissance genius, Raphael.

Raphael's Madonnas are "sweeter", they usually look at Jesus and have a gesture of tenderness; they are very "maternal."

Botticelli's Madonnas, on the other hand, are beautiful but decidedly more serious. They are not usually looking at Jesus but are absorbed in thoughts; they are more solemn. We could say that they are less maternal and more "mothers of God."
