André Breton, ideologist and founder of Surrealism, considered that Joan Miró was “the most Surrealist” artist in the movement.
Why? Because the essence of Surrealism (“beyond reality”) is to liberate the unconscious, no to let reason interfere in the creative process. This method is called psychic automatism: to create automatically, “without thinking.”
Although we can suspect that the “pure” automatism which Breton described in his theories is impossible (as there probably is a bit of rationality in every creation), in the works of Joan Miró we can observe that “stream of the unconscious” in the free association of forms, colors and things.
