Marie Spartali was a beautiful model who inspired the great painters and poets of her time. There is a famous phrase of the poet Swinburne referring to Marie: “She is so beautiful that I want to sit down and cry.”
Sometimes history plays a dirty trick, and her beauty was so overwhelming that the world that admired her could not appreciate her talent as an artist. Today she is considered as the best Pre-Raphaelite painter, but she is still not remembered as she deserves.
