Dorothea Tanning was an American artist. During World War II, she met the exiled Surrealists in the United States. She joined them and also got married to Max Ernst.

At that time, between the 40's and early 50's, her paintings were based on the distressing dreams of her childhood, where the fears that took shape from the darkest areas of her unconscious terrified and fascinated her at the same time. Regarding those childhood nightmares, she said: "My dreams are bristling with objects that relate to nothing in the dictionary.”
