The great painters in the history of modern Latin American art used to travel to Europe to “complete their formation.” And so did Diego Rivera.
In Europe, artists incorporated the techniques and resources of modern art, which later used to renew and vindicate the cultural tradition of their people. The new tools would merge with the elements of folklore and so artists gave new life to popular culture and transmitted the new conviction. Rivera for example, supported the ideals of the Revolution.
After spending a couple of years in Madrid and visiting several capitals, Rivera arrived to the Paris of Picasso and the bohemia. And as from his contact with Picasso and other cubists, Cubism dominated his work before it was transformed into an icon of Modern Mexican art.
