Rococo
- Rococo is the “aristocratic” style that was born in France and prevailed in Europe during all the 18th century.
- The works usually transmit elegance, grace, sophistication, sensuality and fineness, elements found in the Courts at that time.
- The themes are sentimental, light, a reflection of the carefree and happy life of the aristocrats who did not imagine the tragic destiny waiting for them with the French Revolution.
- The predominant colors in the palette of the artist, as can easily be guessed, are soft or pastel colors.
- As from French Revolution (1789), with the defeat of the ruling class, this style received very hard criticism and fell in disgrace. It was accused of being superficial, frivolous, immoral and purely decorative.
Representative Artists: Fragonard, Boucher, Watteau, Vigée Lebrun.
