Moments of Edward Hopper
In 1906, when he was 24, Hopper travelled to Europe for the first time. In Paris, instead of being dazzled by the European avant-garde, Impressionist painting amazed him, and he studied its language.
Probably, this approach to the art of the impressionists (although he soon stopped painting like them), is what made him an expert in the use of light to generate atmospheres. Atmospheres that (with a rather cold, melancholic, unnatural light), became a fundamental ingredient of the artist's work, for which he is considered "the painter of the loneliness of modern man."
