Characteristic Elements of Synthetism
Synthetism is a method of art evolved by Gauguin, Bernard, and other artists of Pont-Aven in 1888. It was born at the time of Post-impressionism, and it became a decisive influence on Expressionism, which dominated the art scene of the first half of the twentieth century.
Non-realistic technique. The representation definitely moves away from the imitation of the forms of nature.
Vivid colors. They do not coincide with reality but seek to express emotions.
Cloisonnism. The color is applied by zones delimited by a very clear border.
Disregard for the rules of traditional perspective.
Symbolism or symbolic elements.
Rather flat figures. Little volume and little depth.
Simple drawing. The line "becomes more pure."
Primitivism. Fascination with the simple forms of ancestral and exotic cultures.
