“The senses are our bridge between the incomprehensible and the comprehensible”
August Macke
Macke was one of the important painters of German Expressionism.
He was a member of the Blue Rider, the group that moved towards abstraction with its colorful compositions (his companions were none other than Kandinsky and Marc).
Despite his short life (26 years), Macke became a great master of color. With simplicity and almost abstract stains (also influenced by the Orphism of Robert Delaunay, another father of abstraction), he achieved marvelous effects of light and dynamism.
His secret was to create the space by means of contrasts of colors instead of contrasts of light and darkness.
Macke proposed “understanding through the senses.” It is no coincidence that an Expressionist _that is, someone who expresses feelings and moods by stimulating the senses with color_ had this idea.
Art is feeling. His concept, then, is that works of art should be explained less and felt more. Just like life.
