Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that, awaiting Gauguin's arrival (they lived together for a time in Arles), he wanted to express his joy by painting a series of pictures with nothing but sunflowers. He imagined the series as a "symphony of blue and yellow." It is no longer important to paint these flowers as they really are, but rather to let the form, the brushstrokes, and the color turn the sunflowers into the artist's emotions.
This is a clear precedent for Expressionism.
