Van Gogh, Arles and Yellow

Six paintings. One concept

One of the most wonderful things about Van Gogh’s painting is how he combined blue and green. This combination reached its peak during his most passionate stage in his life, paradoxically, when his death was near.

Vincent lived in Arles almost the whole of 1888 and some months of 1889. There he painted frenetically about 300 works. We intuitively identify that stage as the yellow color period.

Beyond his exquisite combinations, yellow is the protagonist. Vincent was fascinated with the light of Arles, and that is why he used yellow, a lot of yellow, even in his night compositions.

And although it may seem unbelievable, Vincent confessed to Theo in a letter that he felt not being able to achieve with his palette “the strength of Arles light.”
