Raphael and La Fornarina

Six Paintings. One Concept

Margherita Luti was the daughter of a baker, and she was called La Fornarina (the Little Baker). She was Raphael’s great love and lived with him, although they did not get married because he was engaged to the niece of the cardinal Dovizi (trusted man of the Medici family). Nevertheless, when a cleaning of her portrait was done, (the first we place in this series), it was discovered that she had a wedding ring in her finger which might be a symbol or they might have got married in secret.

Raphael used to place the faces of her loved ones on the Madonnas he had to paint That is why as from his falling in love with La Fornarina —who lasted till the end of his life— she was the model of many of his works of the mature stage —the most exquisite— where his most famous Madonnas can be found, as the Sistine or the Madonna della Sedia.
