Monet’s path to Impressionism

Six Paintings. One Concept

Although the first Impressionist exhibition was in 1874, one decade before we can identify some characteristics in Monet that would consolidate into “definitive Impressionism.”

We can observe his intention of capturing “the real” instead of painting what Academies imposed. We also find his admiration for Manet, especially for The Luncheon on the Grass. It is the work of Manet that motivated those who became Impressionists to go deeper in the search of the real, and Monet painted his own version.

And we can already find in his work his special interest in light as he was heading towards that huge movement that was arising. He often painted outdoors —sometimes, with Renoir— and started to treat shadows with color.
