Modigliani and Beatrice Hastings

Six Paintings. One Concept

When Modigliani met Beatrice Hastings, he had not yet painted the work that would make him one of the great painters of the 20th century. What's more, he would not live much longer, just six years. He felt he had failed as a painter and had returned to sculpture. But when he met Beatrice, Modigliani returned to painting.

He fell in love with her and portrayed her again and again (although most people know about Jeanne Hébuterne, who he met later). The love story has some very attractive details: Beatrice, a British poetess and journalist, had moved to Paris to write for a newspaper about the mythical Parisian Bohemia, which besides being a social phenomenon dominated the art world, and she herself ended up falling in love and living with the "most bohemian" artist of all. It is funny how she defined the artist the first time she met him, when she still did not know who he was: "A complex character, a pig and a pearl... he looked ugly, ferocious and greedy."

At the second meeting, Beatrice confessed that she found him charming. She had already fallen in love with the pearl and the savage.
