Grimshaw was a romantic of the second half of the 19th century who idealized ports and urban landscapes, filling them with magic and charm. In an era where light and atmospheric conditions were the protagonists (think of the Impressionist movement), Grimshaw showed all his virtuosity by painting nocturnes, which has earned him the undisputed nickname of "the painter of moonlight."
