Ethel Carrick, the "Australian Impressionist"
Six Paintings. One Concept

Ethel Carrick was a painter born in England, on February 7th 1872. Nevertheless, she developed a great part of her career in France and in Australia. Australia became her home for a long time since she got married to the Australian Impressionist painter Emanuel Phillips Fox. His prestige as an artist eclipsed his wife’s talent, who after many years started to finally be recognized.
Ethel Carrick was associated with the movement known as the Heidelberg School, a kind of “Australian Impressionism.” We can observe Impressionism in the spontaneous, quick brushstroke and also in the themes of her paintings: the city middle class life. Nevertheless, we can also appreciate influences posterior to Impressionism, more avant-garde like or at least, “Post-impressionist” influences, such as her sometimes vibrant palette and a lot of synthesis.
