Derain and the Wild Color

Six Paintings. One Concept

Derain said that Fauvism was important because it liberated the image from its imitative tradition. The Fauve artist did not longer reproduce faithfully the exterior, but expressed the inner world, and used color as a violent provocative method of expression. For that reason Derain and his group were pejoratively called "fauves" (which means “wild beasts").

Color displaced the chosen theme. Whether he painted a ship, landscape or a dance was no longer important. Color expressing life and enthusiasm was the true protagonist.
