Da Vinci and Glazing
Six paintings. One concept

Glazing consists in applying transparent thin layers of paint which modify the underlying paint layer and soften the color.
Da Vinci, the master of sfumato —the fine shading that produces soft, imperceptible transitions between colors and tones and produces greater realism and depth— used multiple glazes to achieve those effects.
Thanks to the technological advances, it has been determined that there are up to 30 superposed glazes in his Gioconda.
