Dripping
Pollock’s most important works are made with this technique, which can be framed within the action painting of Abstract Expressionism.
It is ideal for releasing emotions and moods. It is almost like psychic automatism, which is a creative process of the surrealists that allows the unconscious to emerge, eliminating reason.
Once the canvas was stretched on the floor, Pollock (who usually accompanied his “liberation” with jazz music) let enamel or industrial varnish drip from the brush or the rods used to mix the colors and stir. He also perforated cans and put paint in them so as to let the paint drip onto the canvas.
Pollock did not touch the canvas with the brush. He directed the fall of the paint with his arm movements, as he swirled around the work. In this way, he felt that, beyond creating a work, he was “immersed” in the work.
