The Best American Movies in History According to the American Film Institute

To celebrate the first century of cinema, the American Film Institute (AFI) conducted a survey among more than 1,500 artists and film industry leaders. Out of 400 nominated films, the respondents chose the 100 best American films of all time (there are some British films on the list, but they were included as American films because they were financed by American studios).

These are the first 20 positions on this list released in 1998. (Ten years later, the list was updated, and there were some changes in the positions, including some films produced during that period.)

Regarding these lists, surely no one totally agrees with their content, but we may say that the vision of a specialized majority is a good starting point to start reflecting on the subject and discussing it.

Like everything in this world, there is what we consider to be excellent and then there is what we fall in love with, which does not necessarily coincide with the former. That's life. If the majority of connoisseurs consider that certain works of art are the best in the world, that does not oblige us to fall in love with them. But having that reference is good.
Having a list of films chosen by a prestigious institution is better than having no list at all.

(We will soon publish other lists with films from all over the world.)
