Klimt and modernism —the movement of which he is one of the fundamental references— are pure sensuality, rich ornamentation, luxury, elegance, and exquisiteness.
It was a time when women were becoming aware of their power and were becoming independent; and the women of the Viennese society wanted to be portrayed by Klimt: they wanted to see themselves with that sensuality and with that power.
Klimt then showed them proud, delicious, with a touch of eroticism, and certainly powerful.
Those portraits were no longer portraits of ordinary women (let's take a closer look, for example, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, popularly called The Woman in Gold) and became icons (in the sense of religious images) became deities.
